Consultation & Training

The purpose of this project is to offer affordable psychological resources to groups and organizations working on sustainability, ecology, and conservation issues.

 Compass
The Consultation and Training Initiative offers affordable psychological resources to groups and organizations working on sustainability, ecology, and conservation issues in the Pacific Northwest. This includes activists, grassroots and non-profit organizations, as well as special committees within larger organizations.  It is an initiative of Psychology for a Sustainable Future (PSF), a project of the Center for Earth Leadership.  The Center's role is to share information with those interested in this initiative, but does not certify individual consultants.

Why are psychological resources important?

The field of Psychology possesses a wealth of knowledge that is directly relevant to many social and environmental issues in terms of understanding problems and their potential solutions.  PSF hopes to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of environmental non-profits and other green groups.

The Consultation and Training Initiative offers project consultations and in-service trainings and organizes The Circle Group: An Activist HR Network.

  • Project-consultations focus on improving the effectiveness of projects, programs, and initiatives by introducing a psychological perspective during the planning process.  This might involve inviting a consultant to attend a single meeting or to join an ongoing committee or board. Either way, the goal is to share insights, ideas, and feedback.
  • In-service trainings focus on education and skill-building to address common challenges such as staff dynamics, leadership skills, conflict resolution, stress and burnout, program evaluation, organizational development, and research strategies.

  • The Circle Group: An Activist HR Network hosts a monthly open discussion on topics related to activist group process and offers confidential consultations to activist organizations and grassroots initiatives.  See the full description for further information.

How affordable are these resources?

Project consultations generally involve no fees, unless travel or other expenses are involved. In-service trainings may require nominal fees depending on the nature of the request.

Who are the consultants?

The consultants are therapists, instructors, and other professionals within psychology-related fields.  The consultants are not certified by the Center, although most consultants have advanced degrees, and many have extensive experience working with activists and non-profits.
