Fall 2008 Programs

The Center has a variety of classes, workshops, and seminars available to both the public and invited groups.

Classes:

Agent of Change in Your Circle of Influence

Class 1 & 2:  Thursdays, September 18, September 25, October 2, October 9, October 16, and November 13
Time: 7:00 to 8:45 pm

Class 3:  Mondays, October 13, October 20, October 27, November 3, November 10, and December 8
Time: 7:00 to 8:45 pm

Class 4:  Tuesdays, October 14, October 21, October 28, November 4, November 11, and December 9
Time: Noon to 1:30 pm

This six-session class trains participants on how to be effective change agents within a chosen circle of influence – workplace, church, school, professional group, neighborhood, community, etc.  Each participant selects one circle, develops a strategy and plan for change, and takes steps of early implementation, in consultation with other members of the class.  Presenters: Jeanne or Dick Roy and a co-presenter.

Assessing Your Ecological Footprint

Wednesdays, Starting October 15, 2008 - 7:00 to 9:00 pm

This six-session class explores the use of the Ecological Footprint – an internationally respected tool for measuring resource consumption and waste assimilation requirements of an individual or given population.  After learning to use the tool, specific topics covered by experts include transportation, food, home energy, consumer goods, toxic chemicals, and water.  Facilitator: Jeanne Roy; presenters: guest experts.

Seminar:

Earth Leadership Training

This is an intensive six-session seminar.  Content covered includes (1) three primary contexts for one’s work for a sustainable future: economic globalization, consumer culture, and advanced ecological degradation; (2) societal response to ecological degradation; (3) individual response to ecological degradation; (4) current human initiatives; (5) the state of the sustainability movement – its promise and limitations; (6) moving to a higher level of engagement; and (7) practices for maintaining hope and focus over time.  Presenter: Dick Roy.

Workshops:

The Local Organizer's Toolkit: Essential Knowledge for Change

This three-hour workshop explores how one takes the lead to initiate change with the help of others.  The tools and principles have been developed for those who seek to advance the goal of creating a sustainable future.  Presenters: Jeanne and Dick Roy.

The Path to Zero Waste 

Date to be announced

Last year, Jeanne Roy and her husband filled only one can of garbage.  Yet, the state's latest survey shows that the average Oregonian generates more than 3000 pounds of waste per year, an amount that continues to rise.  In this one-hour presentation, Jeanne will discuss why this is so and provide practical steps to drastically reduce household waste. 

 

Other Programs:

Home Eco-Party Program

Date selected by the volunteer host

A two-hour event where participants learn how to make their respective homes more eco-friendly by evaluating waste reduction, toxics reduction, energy savings, and water conservation.  Presenters: Trained Center volunteers.

Green Minds Discussion Group

The 1st or 2nd Friday of each month

Green Minds is a reading and discussion group focusing on the psychological aspects of the environmental and sustainability movements, including mental health practice, fostering behavior change, and addressing business or organizational challenges.
