Assessing Your Ecological Footprint
Participants will learn how to measure the size of their footprint and to determine steps that will bring about the greatest reductions.
Wednesdays, Starting October 15, 2008 - 7:00 to 9:00 pm
Content: The Ecological Footprint is an internationally respected
tool for measuring the resource consumption and waste assimilation requirements
of a given population or individual.
Class participants will use the tool to measure their impact and learn
which steps bring about the greatest reductions.
In a broad sense, the course will assess sustainability and carrying capacity; measuring human impact; and footprint calculation. Specific topics covered include:
- Transportation
- Food
- Home energy
- Consumer goods
- Toxic chemicals

Participants will be asked to complete short homework assignments between sessions. Assignments will involve some collection of data required to assess one's footprint.
Presenters: A local expert will present each topic. The overall facilitator will be Jeanne Roy, founder of Recycling Advocates, the Portland Master Recycler program, and the Home Eco-Party program. She wrote a weekly newspaper column for five years, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," and she is the author of "Eco-Tips" (Northwest Earth Institute Web site) and Ten Stresses on the Planet.
