Home Eco-Party Program
The Home Eco-Party is a two-hour event
where participants learn how to make their respective homes more eco-friendly. A host
invites six to twelve friends, neighbors, or co-workers to a party and provides
refreshments. The Center provides a
checklist that each participant completes for his/her own home. At the party, a trained facilitator provided
by the Center uses the checklist as a guide for discussion.
Topics covered
1. Waste Reduction: Effective composting, creating an efficient recycling
system, reducing packaging and junk mail
2. Toxics Reduction: Identifying toxic products and learning about effective alternatives
3. Energy Savings: Weatherization audits, testing shower-head flow, new technologies
4. Water Conservation: Savings through more efficient appliance use
and yard irrigation
The parties are both enjoyable and effective for several
reasons:
1. Participants, completing a checklist, are introduced to lifestyle issues they often haven't considered.
2. The host's home presents real examples that stimulate discussion and new ideas.
3. Hearing stories from friends, participants are
inspired to make changes in their own practices.
Facilitators are trained by Jeanne Roy,
Co-Founder of the Center for Earth Leadership and creator of the Home Eco-Party
Program and Portland's
Master Recycler Program.
Parties are generally held on a weekday evening or a Saturday afternoon. They can be scheduled by a host (at least one month before desired party date) by contacting the Center at (503) 227-2315 or info@earthleaders.org.
