Content: Each of us is a member of numerous circles of influence, such as a workplace,
neighborhood, club or organization, school, center of faith, extended family, condominium
association, etc. Each circle provides a natural arena for the work of
the change agent seeking to create a more sustainable culture. In the
broader community, such as the City of Portland or the State of Oregon, the
culture is a composite of the values, attitudes, and habits of its citizens and
its myriad circles of influence. Thus, as an agent of change works within
a confined circle, the agent is also pulling the broader community along the
path of sustainability.
This five-session class covers the theory, practice, and tools of a change agent working within a chosen circle of influence. Each participant will select one circle of influence, develop a strategy and plan for change, and take steps of early implementation, in consultation with other members in the class.
Specific topics covered include:
- Theories and strategies for citizen-led cultural change.
- Role, mindset, and general approach of the agent of change.
- Selecting a specific circle of influence for work as a change agent.
- Understanding Point A – assessing the full potential of the chosen circle of influence and understanding the key elements of its context.
- A vision for Point B – clarifying either a limited or expanded vision for more sustainable practices within the circle.
- Developing a plan for work as a change agent in the selected circle of influence with a focus on early implementation steps.
Presenters: Jeanne and/or Dick Roy, co-founders of the Center for Earth Leadership, the Northwest Earth Institute, and the Oregon Natural Step Network. They may be assisted by other instructors.
Participants: This class is intended for motivated individuals who wish to help create a sustainable future and who are ready to prepare and implement a project to reduce human impact on the earth.
